The Ice Man - 1940

Of policy no one had electric refrigerators in the 1940's, at least not in our neighborhood. So we were solely dependent on the "Ralph Kramden" ice box. This machine was unique and useful. A two compartment unit made out of wood. And, it was lined with steel painted white. The top compartment was normally smaller and that held the food that needed refrigeration. The bottom section was larger and held the block of ice.

The Ice Man - 1940

The top didn't have any shelves as I remember so food was kind of stuffed in as best you could. The bottom could if needed be used to keep things cold as well as keep the ice. No Freezer Section. If you wanted ice for drinks you just grabbed the ice pick and chipped off some ice for your drink. Or, take a large chunk wrap it in a towel and beat it with a hammer on the kitchen table. The early ice crusher was born. Let me tell you how impressed I was just with ice cubes in water. When my parents finally upgraded to a dissimilar home my Mom one day set out a pitcher of water with ice cubes in it. No holiday, no special occasion. I idea we were rich.

The Ice Man - 1940

The Ice Man - 1940

The whole carrying out depended on retention a regular provide of ice in the ice box. The ice firm in case, granted a sign that could be hung in the front window of your house. It had four side with four dissimilar sizes of ice on each side. Our job as kids after we were told was to hang the ice sign in the window and to make sure the size needed was at the bottom. And you great not forget.

The ice man would come along in his delivery truck on some designated schedule. He would read the sign in the window. Cut a block of ice that matched the signs requirement. He had a leather sling and shoulder pad that he used to carry the cube up on his shoulder with. Our guy was lucky. We lived in a house and the ice box was in the kitchen on the first floor. Sometimes the Ice Man had to carry the block of ice up flights of stairs to people who lived in apartments. His tools were ice tongs and ice pick. And of policy a strong back. Just think about this mans job. All day long up into the truck, cut a chunk of ice. Dismount load the block on your back and carry it to the Ice Box. And, ice tongs and ice picks, us kids were impressed.

You got automatic delivery if the sign was in the window. The ice man just opened the front door with the cube of ice on his shoulder and hollered out "Ice Man". In he came found the ice box and put the new block of ice into it. Didn't matter what was going on in the family. He just let himself in the house. And, if I remember right he got paid cash on the spot.

Along his route as he was delivering he would sound the call "Ice Man", for those who needed ice but forgot to put up the sign. Or, the kids who forgot to do what their parents told them. If no one was colse to to corral him then you got no ice. And, problem was afoot. For you.

Now there were times when thing just didn't work out. We would run out of ice and the Ice Man wasn't due to deliver for some time. Here's where the advantages of having a child came in. Mom would say, "Get the wagon and go get some ice.". I don't know where the wagon ever came from but one became available. It was our job to go over to the Ice House and bring home a block of ice. For me that was a 10 block round trip. And, sometimes Mom would let you pick up a block of ice for a neighbor too.

Wagon in tow off you would go to get the ice. 8th and Dupont road on the angle over from Dela Donnes Store was the Ice House. It was a 8' X 10' wooden shed. Lined with steel and full of ice. It was a sub hub for solitaire Ice And Coal. You just asked the attendant for two 15cent blocks of ice and he hacked them off for you and with his tongs loaded them on your wagon.

Now this Ice Man was too scary for us kids. He was an aged black man. Finding back probably not paid very much in a labor arduous job. He was bent over and had a contorted body and face. I don't remember either he was amiable or not. I just wanted to get my ice and get out of there. When no one was buying ice he had a stool in front of the ice house he would sit on. To me he just looked menacing with those tongs and ice pick.

The trip home with ice in the summer time was a fun trip. normally there was some change. And, I would take the turn and put it on top of the ice and let it melt down into the block of ice. By the time I got home it could be any inches down into the ice. A exquisite vertical column. How we got the ice cube into the house I don't remember. We probably had a set of ice tongs at home to carry the block of ice in with.

I never relished these jobs our parents put on us. But liking wasn't an choice for our generation. We were the cheap labor and yet most of us grew up without going to jail. And we got an study that allowed us to sustain and raise our families. Chores were just like growing up - they just happened. The chores were there and we were unbelievable to help.

The claws of a lobster grow and convert all through their life span with the young ones starting their lives with the claws comprising only 5% of their body weight, at last growing up to large males that may carry almost 50% of their body weight in the claws. Female lobsters have comparatively smaller claws than the males of the same weight after reaching sexual maturity. The huge crushing claws of a sexually mature male are an object of pride and means to attract the females. Large, rounded molar like teeth adorn the exterior of these crusher claws while the inside is made up of 100% slow twitch muscle fiber. These muscles are characterized by their stamina and strength combined with their potential to preserve strong and long contractions.

Fast lobster claws are known by a amount of names, such as pincher, seizer, and cutter. These claws are remarkable by a serrated edge together with great tufts of sensory hair, lining the pointed and sharp teeth in the outside. Inside, the seizer is typically made of fast-twitch muscles known for their rapidity but lack of potential to preserve contractions for a long time.

The young lobsters begin their lives with these two types of claws ? crusher and seizer. However, at the young age the claws are not differentiated into seizers and crushers, with both kinds having slow and fast twitch muscles together with a probability that the lobsters might grow up to a right or left handed adult. This handed ness is thought about in the first two phases of the young lobster?s life when it starts settling down into the bottom, depending on which claw it mostly uses. The type of the claw is not genetically preordained. Once the young ones have advanced their crusher and seizer claws they remain left or right handed for the rest of their lives.

How to Revive Wilting Cut Roses

How to Revive Wilting Cut Roses

One the arts of reviving wilted roses is to prevent this from happening and this comes with prolonging their life for as long as inherent after cutting.

How to Revive Wilting Cut Roses

How to Revive Wilting Cut Roses

Care of cut roses
Roses should all the time be cut with a very sharp pair of clean shears. If they aren't sharp they will damage the rose's stem by crushing it. Roses should be cut before 3pm in the afternoon as they need to use the early part of the day to store nutrients. Once a bud is fully opened it is too late to cut. Ideally a rose bud should not be more than open or a half open. To aid in the nutrition of the rose whilst standing in water at least three leaves should be left on the stem. Cut off all leaves on the stem below the water line as these will rot and poison the water. Once the water starts getting cloudy it should be replaced with clean hot water.

Cause of wilting cut roses
When it comes to cutting the stems it is important to take off any air that can enter it as this will cut the life of the bloom. One way to prevent this from happening is to cut the stem under the water. Another formula is to stand them in hot water before cutting.

Getting your roses into hot water
Plunging roses into very hot water before arranging can prolong their life. Hot water has also shown itself invaluable for reviving wilted roses. The causes of wilted roses are many; one is because of bacteria in the water. Hot water has the quality to kill bacteria and give roses a new lease on life.

How to cut roses
One of the reasons roses wilt is because they have lost the moisture within their cell structure. This often happens when roses have been cut too early before being settled in a vase or if they have been left standing out of water for too long. To revive them again it is needful to re-hydrate these cells so that they can once again deliver water to the foliage.

Wilting cut roses
If you find your roses wilting, take them out of the vase and cut of about 1/8th off of their stems. Place them into hot water and let them stand for about an hour before rearranging them back in a clean vase filled with fresh water.

At times it appears that only one or two blooms wilt when the others are fine. If this is the case it may be due to an air pocket being lodged in the stem. A rose uses its stem to draw water and if this process is impeded by an air lock as a effect of cutting, water cannot move up the stem and the bloom will droop.

To take off this airlock is simple. Plainly take the dropping or wilted roses out of the vase re-cut their stems and place them into boiling water for about an hour before putting them back into the vase. This uncomplicated yet effective cure will ensure that your roses are once again restored back to their full beauty, head held high.

There is more than one way to revive wilted roses
It is a sad fact that roses will wilt after a few days of being cut. Drooping roses often effect in being thrown away before their time. Being able to revive wilted roses will give you the opportunity to enjoy their heady fragrance and beautiful flowers for many more days.

Hot water as a cure has been explained yet there are alternative methods for reviving wilted roses.

Remove wilted roses from their vase and submerge them fully in a tub of tepid water. While submerged cut off each rose and make a fresh cut on the stem. It is important to do this under water so as to stop air from getting into the stem and causing air locks. take off each rose and roll each one separately in newspaper. Keep the newspaper closed tightly so that it cannot open. Place each wrapped rose back into tepid water and allow soaking for several hours. Remove, unwrap and rearrange your roses as you please.

It is also inherent to revive wilted roses with ice cold water. Place only the stems of wilted roses into a tub filled with cold water and ice cubes. Allow your roses to stand in their cold water bath for a few hours and they will once again be ready to heighten your room.

Approaching a Newfound Crush

And then your nerves start acting up, your mind starts racing, searching for that perfect one liner that would raise her interest (and hopefully her temperature) on you a notch higher. Nothing in your list seems to be good enough. Here's a tip: Stay away from these lines!

1. "Hey! My friend wants to meet you." Oh, dear. You've just labeled yourself the wingman. You don't want to be that, really. And it's such a lame excuse to get a girl's number; she'll probably hook up with your friend just to forget that she got attracted to the designated wingman.

2. "Wanna buy me a drink?" If you think chivalry is dead, you're in the wrong world, honey. Girls still appreciate men who don't think of themselves as equally precious commodity. Why would she buy you a drink? You make the first move boy, and make it worth her time.

3. "You look like man I know." Now you just implied that she looks common, sort of ordinary. What girl, who dressed up and put on her face considered before going out, would appreciate that?

4. "I've seen you before...maybe in my dreams." You give her this line and she'll assuredly stay there, in your dreams.

5. "This place blows; you wanna come with me somewhere else?" Unless she's genuinely bored and you don't look like a serial killer this could work. Otherwise, if she's clear headed, you're going out that door alone, with no place to go.
